Hunger. The dictionary describes hunger as “a feeling of discomfort or weakness caused by lack of food, coupled with a desire to eat. “ How many times during the week do you find yourself saying “I’m hungry!”? For most of us, it is just something we say at regular mealtimes when we feel that grumbling in our stomachs, and once we have eaten our meals- we don’t give it another thought. For many people in Georgia, however, hunger takes on a whole new meaning, and mealtimes may not be the pleasant experience most of us have.
In Georgia, 18.7 % of people living in Georgia are food insecure, which means they do not know where their next meal is coming from. (Feeding America, 2015 Map the Gap study) A devastating 28.2 % of children in Georgia live in food insecure households; this is WELL over 1 in 4 Georgia children! Georgia is one of 8 states that have higher food insecurity rates than the national average (14.6%), coming in well above at 16.6%. (Coleman-Jensen, A., Gregory, C., & Singh, A. "Household Food Security in the United States in 2013." USDA Economic Research Service, 2014. Web Accessed July 19, 2014.)
